The purpose of a copyedit is to streamline the flow of the prose. Things like grammar, syntax, fact checking, spelling, and punctuation are all assessed in this stage while still ensuring the authors voice remains consistent and to their liking. I approach a copy edit with the eyes of a reader to ensure it reads and flows as well as possible for the audience.
